Chapter Thirteen

“Inhale peace,” the pretty woman instructing the yoga class said, “Exhale tension.”

Their instructor was long and lean, and obviously of Asian descent, and she taught the class with a mixture of humour and professionalism that worked well. Especially since, to Cassidy’s amusement, this class of grandmothers contained some extremely sassy ladies.

“Do we have to keep holding this cobra, Asha? My back is kinked. Pretty sure if we don’t stop this, I’m going to be stuck like this forever.”

“I’m fairly certain that won’t happen, Nellie, but if you don’t hold your cobra you won’t be warmed up for the bow. We are doing that next.”

“You might be doing cobra, Asha,” a woman in the back of the room said, “We both know I’m too fat to grab my ankles like that.”

“Beth, what did I teach you all about self-talk last week? Anyone remember?”

“Kill your negative voice and use a nurturing inner voice instead.”

“Very good, Mary. A bit of an aggressive paraphrase, but you got the idea. So, we don’t call ourselves fat, and we don’t say we can’t do something. Instead, we focus on our breathing. So, let’s do that. Tighten your pelvic floors, ladies, and breathe in, breathe out.”

The back and forth amused Cassidy, although she had to agree with Nellie. They’d been holding this cobra long enough that her own back felt kinked -- and most of the women in this class had fourty years on her.

These ladies might have grey hair, but they were tough. This was no beginner level course Asha was teaching. By the end, lying stretched out on her back in shavasana, Cassidy’s body felt like an elastic band that had been stretched right up to the breaking point. Her mind felt like a creased-up piece of paper with every last wrinkle smoothed out. It was a beautiful thing.

Despite a slightly rotund physique, Edna Gruen had kept up with every single pose. Cassidy was impressed. The woman hadn’t complained once, either, not even on the poses they’d held long enough that Cassidy felt like her own arms might fall off.

“How long have you been taking this class, Edna?”

“About a year now,” Edna answered while rolling up her yoga mat. “I do it for my high blood pressure. Doctor’s orders.”

Cassidy’s eyebrow shot up.

“Well, you’re very adept. Impressive.”

“It’s the dancing.”

“Dancing?”

“Mmm hmm,” Edna responded. “You didn’t know I was a dancer, did you?”

Either yesterday’s late night or the wine -- or maybe both -- had taken a toll on Cassidy’s brain. She simply wasn’t following.

“You’re a dancer?”

Edna hooted with laughter.

“Oh, my no, dear, those days are long gone. But I was. Ballet. I even taught for a bunch of years.” She changed the subject while Cass was still blinking in surprise. “You look relaxed. Did you enjoy the class?”

“Very much. It was a lot more challenging than I expected.”

Edna laughed again.

“That’s Asha for you. She likes to push us. Come on, I’ll introduce you. I think you’ll like her.”

Cassidy followed Edna to the front of the classroom, then waited while Asha finished organizing her gear for her next class.
